Treks in Morocco

Morocco offers varied treks, mainly divided between
the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert

Morocco, a land of striking contrasts, offers a paradise for hikers and trekkers, with a diversity of landscapes ranging from the snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains to the vast sandy expanses of the Sahara.

Treks in the High Atlas are undoubtedly the most popular. This majestic range, nicknamed the « roof of North Africa, » offers an accessible high-mountain experience, combining physical challenge with cultural richness.
The main attraction is the ascent of Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest summit in North Africa. This expedition, generally completed over two or three days from the village of Imlil, crosses rugged yet magnificent alpine landscapes, often snow-covered for part of the year.
It requires a good level of physical fitness and is usually supervised by experienced local guides.

The Moroccan South offers a radically different adventure: that of the desert, a land of silence and infinite horizons.
This is where one embarks on the mythical méharées (dromedary treks), a slow and contemplative travel experience.
The unmissable destinations are the great dunes of Erg Chebbi (near Merzouga) or Erg Chegaga (more isolated, accessible via
M’hamid El Ghizlane). These seas of sand with ochre and golden hues, which can reach over 150 meters high, offer the unforgettable spectacle of sunrise and sunset, and the magic of a night under an incomparable starry sky, far from any light pollution. The dromedary becomes the ideal travel companion for reaching traditional bivouacs.

Besides the exhilaration of the desert, the region offers hikes through more rocky and spectacular landscapes.
The sublime Drâa Valley, a true linear oasis punctuated by luxuriant palm groves and ksour (fortified earthen villages), offers a journey through the history of the ancient caravan routes.

Finally, the Saghro massif, the gateway to the desert, seduces with its volcanic landscapes, strange fairy chimneys, and rocky peaks. Less arid than the great sand desert, it offers magnificent hikes in winter and spring, away from the crowds.
These treks in the Moroccan South are a true quest for tranquility and raw beauty, offering a unique perspective
on nomadic life and the power of nature.
